The Project

Situated right on the coast of sunny state Queensland, Gladstone is the perfect place for swimming and outdoor leisure. The Gladstone Aquatic Centre is located right in the heart of town, just one block from the main shopping centre. The pool attracts many people in the summer months, where locals can escape the heat and relax. However, such extreme UV ratings in the higher latitudes, create a real risk of skin damage from the sun. The solution was to install six retractable Shaderunners, creating the perfect outdoor environment.

The Solution...

Shadeform were asked to provide a flexible shade canopy that would function all year round. The Shaderunner was chosen as a perfect solution to provide a comfortable environment for patrons in the hot tropical climate. With extensions over twenty metres, the Shaderunner was able to span wide sections of pool area, without intrusive structures mid-way. Also with the use of a simple pulley system and manual winch, the sail was able to be fully retracted when desired. This fantastic ability creates the option of opening up the pool and allowing much needed natural sunlight on colder days.

Design...

Shadeform consulted with the Argo Architects and local builders Beaucorp to come up with an initial design. A concept was selected and then developed through to a working model using the latest Computer Aided Design packages.

Involving such a large structure, the park was designed to incorporate the retractable shade sails, and their subsequent layout within the park was planned in advanced.

The ability to include the sails as a feature, proved an effective solution in providing both form and function. The added benifit of retracting the sails, also considerably reduced the engineering cost and involvment, as the sails can be completely secured in storm situations.

Manufacture & Install...

The Shaderunners were manufactured in our Flinders Park factory just five minutes from Adelaide’s CBD. Working in conjunction with Toll Express and Pack and Send Adelaide, all six Shaderunners were transported and installed with the supervision of our expert staff. Due to no access what so ever inside the Aquatic Centre, a 20T crane was utilised in the install process.

The Shaderunners themselves are manufactured from ‘Outlook’ Polyester Mesh fabric, a durable premium grade woven mesh fabric with excellent tear strength and warranties. Complete waterproof options are available through the use of a PVC fabric.
