Sporties Tavern

The Sporties Tavern is a popular pub, providing welcome respite to locals and workers in the Port Pirie area. The pub has recently undergone a programme of refurbishment, with the main bar being renovated to provide a new fresh feel, and the creation of a new contemporary beer garden with outdoor dining booths, large TV screen and a central grassed alfresco area.

To provide shelter to patrons using this fantastic new space, a stunning Flexshade Tetra Twin Beam Edge was installed over the area. As a twin cone tensile membrane structure, this particular model has a perimeter beam edge to support gutters and blinds if required. The structure is engineered using the latest FEA design software, with the waterproof PVC membrane designed, patterned and manufactured to millimeter accuracy.

Although the Tetra Twin is available as a standard modular structure in a range of sizes, the Sportsmans Tavern Tetra was custom designed to provide the maximum coverage for the area. The translucent waterproof PVC membrane allows light to transmit to the space below, whilst providing both UV protection and rain protection. The addition of lights, heaters and fans enables the area to be used on the hottest and coolest days alike, with the integration of perimeter gutters and downpipes providing a fully weatherproof environment.

The co-ordination of the install was critical to the success of the project. As the perimeter edge beam was to pass under the dining booth roof, erecting the framework was not a straight forward process. Instead, one half of the structure had to be constructed in the adjacent car park, craned over the roof into the beer garden, and then set down just next to the holding down bolts on which the structure would sit. The remaining beams and columns where then attached to the main frame, before the whole structure was lifted by crane into its final position and set down onto holding down bolts and secured.
